President Obama, can you hear us now?

Following the incredible organizing and grassroots protests of President Obama in August, we wanted to share a recap and a compilation of press hits.

Listen to the science. That’s what President Obama heard when he toured upstate New York last month while more than a thousand concerned citizens came out in Buffalo, Syracuse and Binghamton on short notice to protest Obama’s support of natural gas and fracking.

Unfortunately, President Obama has turned a blind eye to the science around fracking. The science shows that fracking cannot be done safely, that it contaminates water, pollutes the air, and makes people sick. Science also shows that fracking is disastrous for the climate.

Protesters lined the streets for hundreds and hundreds of feet where the president’s bus arrived. Some reported locking eyes with Obama. Then his gaze would shift – most likely to the familiar message of ‘Yes We Can’ on posters throughout the crowds. But they were only familiar at first, for these signs said ‘Yes We Can BAN FRACKING NOW.’ And he certainly heard it, as chants of “Obama, Ban Fracking Now!” rang loud enough to drown out most else.

President Obama has proclaimed that science dictates “courage” and “bold action” in taking action to address climate change. He has called out Congressional leaders for denying the science. He’s right, on both counts.

But we can’t only listen to the science on coal and oil. They’re dirty. So is fracking and natural gas. There is no clean coal. There is also no clean (or renewable) natural gas. The courage and bold action science calls for also means rejecting fracking.

President Obama, look at the science. Look at the victims of fracking and the destruction it is causing across the country. And as you look back on your visit to New York, consider the hard times wrought by Sandy, Irene and Lee. Those storms, from which we are still recovering, serve as stark reminders why you’re right that we have to take bold action.

New Yorkers have been taking a stand against fracking for years – tirelessly motivated by the science and facts to take action time and time again, to take a stand for our health and a better future.

In your June speech on climate change, you called on Americans to “speak up,” “push back on misinformation,” “speak up for the facts” and “stand up for our future.” When you visited upstate New York, that’s exactly what we did, as we have been for years. We protested to send you a critically important message: listen to the science and say no to fracking!

If you come back to New York, we’ll be out again, and again and again, because our future depends on it. But we’d much rather work with you, because we agree 100% with something else you said in June: “if we can come together and get this right, we can define a sustainable future.”

Listen to the science, President Obama, and join us as Americans Against Fracking!
